A comprehensive guide to selecting the ideal laboratory fume hood. Compare steel, PP and stainless steel fume hoods and find the right unit to match your lab’s chemical handling requirements.

A fume hood is one of the essential pieces of equipment in any laboratory. It protects researchers from hazardous vapors, gases and particulate matter during experimental operations. However, with multiple types, materials and configurations available on the market, choosing a suitable fume hood can be challenging. This article will walk you through the critical factors to consider when purchasing a fume hood for your laboratory.

Why a High-quality Fume Hood Matters

A laboratory fume hood serves as the primary line of defense against chemical exposure. A properly selected and installed fume hood can:

-Contain and exhaust toxic fumes, vapors and dust particles.

-Protect personnel from chemical splashes and unexpected chemical reactions.

-Help maintain good indoor air quality within the laboratory.

-Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

Sager Lab Furniture manufactures a full range of fume hoods designed to meet diverse laboratory demands, from standard teaching laboratories to advanced research facilities.

Types of Fume Hoods (Classified by Material)

The material of your fume hood must be compatible with the chemicals you handle. Below are the three mainstream options:

1. Steel Fume Hood

Steel fume hoods are the most common option for general laboratories. Constructed from cold-rolled steel with an epoxy powder coating, they deliver reliable corrosion resistance.

Suitable for: General chemistry laboratories, educational institutions, pharmaceutical quality control laboratories.

Advantages: Cost-effective, widely available; robust and durable; applicable for most non-corrosive chemical operations; available in standard and custom sizes.

Limitations: Not ideal for prolonged exposure to strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or nitric acid.

2. PP (Polypropylene) Fume Hood

PP fume hoods are fabricated from polypropylene, a thermoplastic material with outstanding chemical resistance. Free of metallic components, they avoid corrosion upon contact with strong acids.

Suitable for: Analytical chemistry labs, acid digestion laboratories, trace metal analysis, and all laboratories handling strong acids and alkalis.

Advantages: Excellent resistance to strong acids (HCl, HNO, HSO, HF) and strong alkalis; free from rust and corrosion over time; lightweight yet structurally sturdy.

Disadvantages: Not recommended for high-temperature applications.

3. Stainless Steel Fume Hood

Stainless steel fume hoods (Grade 304 or 316) combine structural strength, superior corrosion resistance and heat resistance.

Best suited for: High-temperature applications, cleanroom environments, radiochemistry labs, and laboratories requiring frequent disinfection.

Advantages: Excellent heat and oxidation resistance; easy to clean and sanitize; high structural integrity.

Grade 316 stainless steel offers enhanced resistance to chloride corrosion.

Disadvantages: Higher acquisition cost.
